Flatulence

Man sitting on the bench | Healthier Me TodayChronic Flatulence is another word for constantly farting or passing gas. It is normal to fart or pass gas as it is the body’s way of getting rid of toxins. Sometimes, it occurs because of a buildup of air.

However, if your Flatulence is excessive, it can be a sign of an underlying cause. In addition, it can be uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing as you cannot control your chronic Flatulence. On average, humans pass gas a minimum of 13 times a day. However, it could be more. Most of the time, people don’t notice!

What Causes Flatulence

There is a long list of causes and underlying conditions that result in chronic Flatulence. However, it is not a rare condition and is usually treatable. The leading causes are:

Swallowing Air

It gets stuck in your stomach and digestive system when you swallow air instead of food. It can cause discomfort. Usually, you swallow air when you:

  • Chewing on gum
  • Smoke
  • Eat too quickly
  • Swallow empty gas/air

Heavy Foods that Amplify Flatulence

Some foods make your digestive system work hard to digest, producing an excessive amount of gas. The most common food is beans; however, the following are also foods that can cause chronic Flatulence:

Heavy Vegetables that Cause Flatulence

  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • White Flour
  • Asparagus
  • Dairy products
  • Onions and Garlic
  • Sugar-free candies

Your diet not only causes chronic Flatulence, but it can also result in complications like:

Symptoms to Look Out For

There are also common symptoms that people with chronic Flatulence suffer from. If you notice any of the symptoms below, you could have chronic Flatulence:

  • Pain in abdomen
  • The buildup of gas, farting
  • Sharp pain near anus
  • Bloating

If the symptoms worsen, you can complicate your health by developing constipation, blood in stool, and pain when trying to use the bathroom. The complications cause infections as bacteria and toxins are trapped in the body. Constipation is not only uncomfortable but dangerous as well.

How Flatulence is Diagnosed

Most of the time, patients can diagnose themselves with this condition. However, since it is a chronic illness, Flatulence needs to occur daily.

Your doctor, however, can diagnose you by conducting a physical and based on the symptoms you display. Your doctor may look for signs like excessive bloating and burping during the physical.

If you have various symptoms on top of Flatulence, the doctor may recommend additional tests to rule out any underlying conditions. For instance, they may take a blood sample to test for diabetes. Obesity is a leading cause and complication of chronic Flatulence. Your doctor can find this information out by looking at your BMI based on your height and weight.

Treatment

After you have a diagnosis, you can start treating your condition. The best way to start doing this is by treating the symptoms first. Since the cause varies for everyone, you may want to consult your doctor before trying a new medication or lifestyle.

There are various over-the-counter medications to release gas. You should take them daily, especially if you are consuming something that produces a lot of gas. Since gas is directly related to diet, it is not uncommon for foods like beans to create gas buildup. Therefore, take a tablet before eating if you know you will eat a heavy bean dish.

Did you know there are also supplements you can take to reduce the chances of Chronic Flatulence? Most of the time, supplements are taken as a preventative technique, but you can treat your condition this way as well. For instance, if you have lactose intolerance, which results in gas buildup, you can take lactose pills. They are sold in nearly all grocery stores and pharmacies. These small tablets aid in digestion and prevent an excess amount of Flatulence. However, it may be easier not to drink or eat dairy to save you from the symptoms.

Managing Flatulence the Right Way

How do you manage chronic Flatulence? Surprisingly, it is not hard to prevent or manage this condition. There are a few things you need to sacrifice, though, to lessen the impact of the symptoms.

For instance, you should eat carbs that are pure to digest food better. Larger carbs with white flour are delicious but take your stomach and digestive system long to digest fully. This can cause gas buildup, leading to sharp pain and the inability to stop passing gas. To manage the condition, you also need to make significant dietary changes to reduce symptoms, for instance, fewer beans and less processed sugar. Processed sugars like sweeteners and low-calorie options can cause gas backup as the digestive system struggles to process the sugars.

Hydration is key! You should consume plenty of liquids and water. If you are hydrated, you decrease the chances of constipation and diabetes. This is important as diabetes and constipation can cause and complicate chronic Flatulence.

If you are struggling to release gas after eating a filling meal, you can change your posture to help. For example, keeping your back straight may release gas fully. Slouching, not only harms your back and stomach but doesn’t allow gas to come out. If you want a delicious and warm drink to aid digestion, you can drink a Ginger hot tea. Ginger reduces inflammation and is a great ingredient that helps digest food.

How can you Live with Flatulence?

All in all, Chronic Flatulence is rarely anything to worry about! While it may feel embarrassing to pass gas constantly, this is normal biological behavior that is necessary! However, if it affects your lifestyle and brings pain, experts recommend treating the condition.

Various underlying conditions can indeed cause Chronic Flatulence, which is why going to a doctor may help. For instance, if the buildup of gas is because of your obesity and diet, the link between both can aid in resolving the issue. Losing weight by eating high-fiber foods with low fat can release gas more fluidly and lead to weight loss. Overall, people suffering from Flatulence live long and happy lives.
